I imagine that in your search to find a therapist, you have seen a plethora of different websites, profiles and services on offer. I imagine that that has caused you more stress and confusion than you need or want right now. I hope that I can help cut through some of that noise, not by talking about what makes me different and why you should choose me, but just being open and honest about who I am and if something I talk about here resonates with you, then reach out!
My name is Matthew, Matt is fine, never Matty. I am married, in my mid 30s with a 2-year-old daughter. I use the gym (when I have the time and headspace to go) and I am always open that the gym is not my friend, I go because it’s good for me and I still complain every second of the way! I have never had a hobby or interest that has lasted longer than a few months for as long as I can remember, often finding a new interest as I’m exposed to something new (usually a client’s recommendation). I know societally that is perceived negatively, but I adopt a 'life is too short to live the same day twice' philosophy and so embrace the opportunity to do something new when it is presented to me. I tend to find client's who are neurodiverse to find this to be a refreshing attitude.
I have worked in mental health since graduating from my undergrad degree in 2012. I started out in support and healthcare roles and pursued therapy further as I gained more life experience and confidence. I have worked with children, young people and adults in services across the board, from the community to psychiatric hospitals. I qualified as a therapist in 2019 and started private practice in 2021. In that time, I have worked hard to hone my skill as a therapist, learning some new techniques and therapies along the way. I approach sessions with a relaxed and informal attitude, throwing some banter in when appropriate. So if you're looking for the clipboard, soft spoken therapist, I am probably not the right fit.
I work mostly with straight, gay, bisexual, queer and trans men from the age of 16+. My clients tend to be hard-working professionals who find themselves striving to be the best version of themselves in order to build, repair and/or maintain their existing relationships. Depending on their reason for coming to therapy, we either focus on the here and now or dive deeper into the past to resolve those underlying issues and experiences.
I offer you a new perspective to your problem, because what good is a therapist that simply agrees with you and repeats patterns you are already stuck in? This can mean bringing your attention to things you may not realise are unhelpful, offering some 'tough love' and challenging your view of the world around you. Your problem becomes mine and side by side by face it to find a way out of whatever loop you’re stuck in- it sounds cliche but I'm very passionate about what I do.
So, if you’re looking for a down to earth, relaxed approach with clear goals, boundaries and a bit of banter on the side, I might be what you’re looking for. Through MEET TO COPE, I currently offer one-to-one CBT and EMDR therapy online, as well as supervision for other therapists and support to businesses.
